AC Milan: Key players’ uncertain future hurting the title ambitions

Rossoneri could miss out on the Champions League if their poor form continues.

AC Milan had a dream start to the season, dominating the leaders’ position for a considerable number of months and at one point, it was touted that Rossoneri would end their Scudetto drought after a long time.

Now, it looks as if Milan could miss out on the Champions League form courtesy of their poor form, which recently culminated in the 3-0 humbling against Lazio.

Perhaps, Milan, currently fifth in the table, suffered their first league defeat of this season against Juventus at the start of this year and surprisingly they went on to lose against Atalanta, Spezia, Inter and Sassuolo, add to it the Europa League exit.

The debacle can be mainly attributed to the unresolved futures of key players in the squad.

Zlatan’s contract talks had been going on a while before it was sorted out recently. The 40-year-old has been crucial to Milan’s revival this season but his form has declined since the turn of this year.

Gianluigi Donnarumma, arguably the best goalkeeper in Serie A, couldn’t live up to his standards in the past few games and everything is pointing towards his contract situation.

The young Italian, who has his contract expiring this summer, is vying for Champions League football, which he feels he can’t seek with his boyhood club regularly.

The 22-year-old is also running high on the wishlist of many top clubs in Europe including the likes of Chelsea and Juventus.

Hakan Calhanoglu is another player whom Milan are still in talks over an extension as his current contract runs out at the end of this season.

The Turkish international has revived to become an integral part of Stefano Pioli’s side this season and hence Milan are wanting to update his deal.
