Freiburg

Freiburg welcomes Bayern Munich to the Europa Park Stadion as club football returns this weekend.

The hosts ended the month of March on a high note, winning two of their matches in the month (D2). After picking up a hard-fought win over Wolfsburg, they travelled to relegation bound Greuther Furth in search of another win, but they were held by Stefan Leitl’s stubborn side.

The draw left Freiburg in fifth place level on points with fourth-placed RB Leipzig, who are ahead of them by goal difference.

Christian Streich has been the man in the centre of everything good Freiburg have done this season. His Freiburg side are on the verge of making history by securing a first-ever Champions League appearance. And with eight rounds of football left to play, that prospect looks more likely barring any future mishap.

Having enjoyed a two-week lay-off from club football, the German tactician would have had enough time to prepare for this showdown against perennial champions, Bayern. With Hoffenheim breathing down their necks and Cologne not far off, Streich and his boys can ill afford to slip up.

They will have to give it their all as they chase glory at the end of the season, but first of all, they have to get a positive result in a fixture that has not favoured them in their last five meetings with a record of four losses and one draw.

Possible Freiburg starting line-up

Mark Flekken, Jonathan Schmid, Manuel Gulde, Nico Schlotterbeck, Christian Gunter, Roland Sallai, Janik Haberer, Maximilian Eggestein, Vincenzo Grifo, Nils Petersen, Ermedin Demirovic.

Injured: Yannik Keitel

Doubtful: Nico Schlotterbeck, Kevin Schade, Hugo Siquet, Lukas Kubler, Jeong Woo-yeong, Philipp Lienhart, Maximilian Eggestein

Suspended: None

Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich will be looking to widen the gap between them and second-placed Borussia Dortmund when they take on Christian Streich’s high flying team.

Bayern went into the international break after a typical thrashing of Union Berlin with goals from France hot-shot Kingsley Coman and teenager Tanguy Kouassi, who had a rare start on the day.

Polish hitman Robert Lewandowski finished the rout with two well-taken goals one from the penalty spot, taking his tally for the league season to a staggering 31 goals. That goal return is eight more and in fewer games than his closest competitor across Europe’s top five leagues and 11 more than Patrik Schick in the Bundesliga scoring charts.

The Bavarians sit six points clear of Borussia Dortmund heading into this encounter and are 18 clear off their hosts.

Since taking over from Hansi Flick, Julian Nagelsmann picked up from right where his predecessor left off. Except for some shock defeats this season, Bayern have enjoyed a successful campaign and are well on course to keep their Bundesliga crown. They will fancy themselves to emerge victorious against Christian Streich’s team as they look to finally put the title race to bed.

Possible Bayern Munich starting line-up

Manuel Neuer, Josip Stanisic, Tanguy Nianzou, Dayot Upamecano, Lucas Hernandez, Joshua Kimmich, Marcel Sabitzer, Kingsley Coman, Thomas Muller, Serge Gnabry, Robert Lewandowski.

Injured: Niklas Sule

Doubtful: Benjamin Pavard, Alphonso Davies
