The Catalans are said to be closing on the Manchester City free agent.

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero, who soon will bid farewell to the Sky Blues, has reportedly set his signs on joining Barcelona.

The city had confirmed earlier that their all-time top scorer at the end of this season, and ever since then, Aguero became subject to the transfer battle of Europe’s top clubs.

Barcelona looks to have won the race for Aguero after said to have offered him a new offer. The proposed deal would allow Aguero to earn €5 million for two seasons. This will rank him as one of the lowest earners in Camp Nou. His salary at Etihad was in the range of €12 million.

The absence of a striker turned out to be a pressing issue for the Catalans, but Aguero’s pursuit was a clear strategy by president Joan Laporta to make his Argentine teammate Lionel Messi happy.

Messi’s contract also expires this summer, and there is a strong interest from French giants PSG, who are ready to meet the Argentine’s wage demands.

However, the Catalans are said to be increasingly confident that Messi would end up staying at the Nou Camp. The Six-time Ballon d’Or winner looks to have been convinced with Laporta’s appointment and the sports project he is set to undertake. There has been no update about Messi’s contract extension, but Barca are said to be trying everything to make their legend stay beyond this summer.

The speculated arrival of Aguero doesn’t affect Barca’s interest in Lyon star Memphis Depay, who is still favoured by manager Ronald Koeman.

With Koeman’s future hanging in the balance, Blaugrana’s stance on Depay could also change.
