Eric Dier is all set to return from his suspension this week and it will be interesting to see Jose Mourinho’s plans for him.
Before the ban, Dier was being used as a centre back and he managed to make quite an impression. The England international managed to force Toby Alderweireld out of the starting lineup with his performances.
But his suspension came at a wrong time and Spurs defenders have found their form recently. It will be interesting to see how Mourinho uses Dier in this weekend’s game. It is a vital game and Spurs will be desperate to secure Europa League football with a win.
Eric Dier’s Role under Mourinho
If Mourinho chooses to use Dier as a centre back, it could show that the Portuguese manager is planning for Dier as a defender.
A return to midfield would be interesting as well. Spurs could use some defensive cover in the middle of the park and Dier is capable of playing in the defensive midfield role.
Dier’s role would also highlight the areas Mourinho could look to strengthen in the transfer market this summer.
Mourinho sounded very protective about the midfielder, when he was asked about the controversial incident at Tottenham Stadium before Coronavirus pandemic struck. The Portuguese coach looks for character than skills, for his players. Dier’s contribution will certainly shape the future for Spurs.
Dier has recently signed a deal with the club until 2024 and he could be a pivotal player for Mourinho going forward. It will be interesting to see if he can carve out a specialist role for himself in the coming months.
Dier has made 239 appearances for Spurs, scoring 11 times, and won 40 international caps for England, forming part of the squad that finished fourth at the 2018 World Cup.
Tottenham have improved a lot under Jose Mourinho and it remains to be seen whether they can secure European football for the next season.
