Barcelona completed the signing of Andreas Christensen from Chelsea on a free transfer, and joining him at the Catalan club will be the former AC Milan midfielder, Franck Kessie.

Both players have joined the Spanish La Liga club upon the expiry of their contract, and Barcelona have now inserted massive release clauses into their contract so that they can dictate the players’ futures over the next few seasons.

According to a report from the Mirror, the two players will have release clauses totalling around €1bn (€500m each).

The Spanish outfit have made it a habit of inserting massive release clauses into the contract of their players so that no club is able to afford them while they are still contracted to the Catalan giants.

Recently the likes of Ansu Fati and Ronald Araujo have all agreed on contracts with release clauses of €1 billionGavi will be offered a similar deal as well amid links to Liverpool.

It is believed that Barcelona are still hurting from the departure of Brazilian superstar Neymar who left the club for a fee of around £198 million after Paris Saint Germain triggered his release clause a few seasons ago.

When Barcelona inserted the £198 million release clause into his contract, they believed that no club would be able to trigger it. But the French outfit did it anyway and left Barcelona powerless to stop him from leaving.

The Spanish outfit have learned from their mistakes and are now keen on protecting their players with unrealistic release clauses.

Meanwhile, Christensen will be hoping to establish himself as a regular starter at Barcelona. The Spanish outfit are in need of defensive reinforcements. With Gerard Pique’s starting position up for grabs, the Danish international will fancy his chances of partnering Ronald Araujo as Barcelona’s starting centre-back.

Meanwhile, Kessie could add a new dimension to Barcelona’s midfield. The Ivorian will add some much-needed physicality alongside the technical ability of players like Gavi and Pedri.

The former Milan midfielder’s arrival will also help Barcelona improve defensively in the middle of the park.
