Former Barcelona striker Luis Suarez has revealed that the club’s board wanted to get rid of him so that they can get him away from Lionel Messi.
The Argentine superstar submitted a transfer request earlier in the summer and he demanded to leave the Spanish Giants.
His close friend Luis Suarez supported his decision and that seems to have infuriated the Barcelona board.
Suarez has joined Atletico Madrid and he has been quite impressive for the Spanish outfit so far.
Speaking to the media about his surprise departure from Barcelona, the striker revealed that his decision to back Lionel Messi has cost him his future at the club.
Suarez said: “I think they wanted to remove me from Messi’s side. Maybe it annoyed them that I had a good relationship with Leo. Perhaps they didn’t want him to be with me so much. I can’t find any reason to think that would damage the team, though.
“We looked for each other constantly on the pitch, but for the good of the team. Maybe they wanted him to play with more teammates. That could have something to do with it. I can’t find any other reason to want to separate us because we got on well on the pitch.”
Suarez will be hoping to show his quality with Atletico Madrid now and prove to Barcelona what they are missing.
He was told that he wasn’t a key part of Ronald Koeman’s plans before Atletico Madrid decided to sign him.
