Manchester United planning to activate £38m release clause of Dayot Upamecano

Arsenal interested to sign RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano

United are looking to sign the French defender in the next summer transfer window.

Manchester United are eyeing a move for RB Leipzig centre-back Dayot Upamecano next summer.

According to reports, United are set to activate the Frenchman’s £38m release clause, which will become active next summer.

United had previously linked with Upamecano in the summer transfer window but failed to sign him due to financial constraints.

With United’s defence withering away in recent times, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s priority turns out to be a new centre-back in the next summer transfer window.

Upamecano, 22, enjoyed a brilliant campaign last season with Leipzig, who reached the semi-finals of the Champions League. It also led to Upamecano’s first call up to the France national team and he made his debut last month.

The young French centre-back is also said to be one of the top targets for La Liga giants Real Madrid, who are looking to find a long-term successor to Sergio Ramos.

Solskjaer will have the chance to witness Upamecano in action when United play Leipzig in the Champions League group stage game.

The Norwegian manager replied that it is normal for good players to get linked with Man Utd when asked about Upamecano’s links.

“I’ve always tried to respect that they are players for other teams and don’t want to comment on every player that we are linked to, but since he’s playing against us tomorrow I know he’s a very good player so we can see him close up.”

United’s marquee signing Harry Maguire has endured some difficult times in recent weeks, with many criticising his performances. Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly are also no exceptions while Axel Tuanzebe showed promise in 2-1 win over PSG.
