Manchester United: Anthony Martial (27″)

Wolves: Ruben Neves (55″)

Paul Pogba saw a penalty saved as Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw by Wolves on Monday Night Football.

First Half

Anthony Martial scored for the second game in a row to put United ahead in the 27th minute, but Ruben Neves levelled with a brilliant curling strike from outside the box shortly after half time.

Second Half

Pogba had the chance to restore United’s lead when he was tripped in the box, but his 67th-minute penalty was well saved by Rui Patricio. The problem for Paul Pogba was not in taking the second-half penalty with which Manchester United should have won this match. It was insisting on taking it. In the end the kick was saved, a fine diving effort from Wolves goalkeeper Rui Patricio, and with it United dropped two precious points and re-opened the debate over the lack of leadership in their side and Pogba’s role in it.

Having scored from the spot in the 4-0 rout of Chelsea in the opening weekend it certainly looked like Marcus Rashford expected to retain penalty duties even if he later denied that was the case as United circled the wagons in their unconvincing defence. Instead, after an unnecessary on-pitch discussion, the striker was over-ruled by Pogba who has now missed four penalties in the Premier League in the past 11 months – which is not a record that should demand taking the ball or insisting on it either.

Once again it meant that Pogba was the centre of attention with the cameras inevitably panning to him at the final whistle and pundit Gary Neville venting his spleen. “This is a Manchester United penalty, this not a tombola, this is not under-fives on the school field,” he ranted. Pogba pulled his shirt over his head in frustration and tore of the tape around his wrists before throwing it to the ground.

After Match

Ruben Neves speaks,  “We had to adjust at half-time. Man Utd started really well, pressed us high up the pitch, and we found it difficult to control the game. We adjusted, took some risks and did well in the second half. “We worked on that corner during the week, and fortunately I scored. I’m really happy. It’s horrible, honestly [waiting for VAR], but that’s football now. Thankfully this time they gave us the goal.”
