Southampton

After booking their place in the third round of the FA Cup following a 3-2 win over Swansea last weekend, Southampton will turn their attention to the Premier League with a visit from Brentford.

The Saints were last in League action on the 28th of December in a 1-1 home draw against Tottenham. The result extended their unbeaten run to three matches in the league and moved them within four points from the top ten.

The hosts have drawn four of their last eight PL matches and are conceding at an average rate of 1.53 goals per game since the beginning of the season.

They are currently in 14th position in the Premier League table with 21 points, and can leapfrog their visitors if they win this game.

However, they have proven to be low scorers and must tighten up in defence if they want to win here as a majority of their wins have been obtained with a one-goal margin (four wins).

Possible Southampton starting line-ups

Fraser Forster; Salisu, Jan Bednarek, Jack Stephens, Romain Perraud; Nathan Redmond, James Ward-Prowse, Oriol Romeu, Mohamed Elyounoussi; Adam Armstrong, Armando Borja.

Injured: Valentino Livramento, Alex McCarthy, Kyle Walker-Peters, William Smallbone

Brentford

After their midweek exertions in the FA Cup, Brentford will return to Premier League action this Tuesday when they face Southampton for the rescheduled 18th round game of the 2021/22 PL season.

The visitors defeated Port Vale 4-1 in the FA Cup thanks to a hat-trick from substitute Bryan Mbeumo.

Their last league outing was a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa in what was their first match of the year.

The win ended a three-game losing run in all competitions. The win also pushed Thomas Frank’s side into 12th, two points behind Leicester in 10th.

They will now look to build on their recent wins and push themselves into the top half of the table. However, their away form has been woeful in recent times as the Bees have won none of their last five top-flight matches on the road – conceding at least two goals on each occasion.

They are on an eight-game run without a clean sheet in all competitions and will have to be on their best to take anything from this tie.

Possible Brentford starting line-ups

Alvaro Fernandez; Kristoffer Ajer, Pontus Jansson, Ethan Pinnock; Sergi Canos, Christian Norgaard, Shandon Baptiste, Mathias Jensen, Mads Roerslev Rasmussen; Bryan Mbeumo, Ivan Toney.

Injured: David Raya, Rico Henry, Charlie Goode, Mathias Jorgensen,
