Steven Gerrard has agreed to join Aston Villa, announcement this week

Scottish side's progress under the management of Steven Gerrard shows that the former Liverpool player is already doing better than the likes of Frank Lampard, Mikel Arteta and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as a manager.

Aston Villa are set to appoint Steven Gerrard as the new manager this week.

According to Ashley Preece from Birmingham Mail, the deal to bring the former Liverpool player to Aston Villa is all but done and an official announcement is expected within the next 24 to 48 hours.

Gerrard was always the top choice to replace Smith at Villa Park.

Dean Smith was recently relieved of his duties after a miserable set of performances and it will be interesting to see if Gerrard can turn things around at Villa Park.

The former England international has agreed to leave Rangers and the Scottish giants are now looking for potential replacements.

Gerrard has done a remarkable job at the Scottish club and he helped them win the league title last season.

The former Liverpool star leaves Rangers at the top of the table, four points clear of bitter rivals Celtic, and it remains to be seen whether the Ibrox giants can defend their domestic crown this season.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa are currently 16th in the Premier League table just two points clear of the relegation zone and Gerrard will be expected to make an immediate impact at Villa Park.

There is no doubt that the Premier League side have several quality players like Ollie Watkins, Emiliano Martinez, Danny Ings, Leon Bailey and Emiliano Buendia at their disposal.

However, Smith struggled to get the best out of his squad this season and the club hierarchy had to look for fresh ideas.

Gerrard has shown that he is a talented young manager with immense potential and he will be desperate to prove himself in the Premier League this season.
