Tottenham Hotspur

After securing a top-four finish on the last day of the 2021/22 season, Antonio Conte will be looking to begin his first full season in charge of Tottenham with a win.

The former Inter Milan boss has transformed the north London side since the time he took over last year, turning them from also-rans to a truly formidable side. The hosts come into this tie without a loss in their last six league games (W4, D2) while they won six of their last seven home games in the league.

Such a form puts them as the favourites for a win in this game as is also the formidable pre-season form that saw them win two of their four friendly games.

Having added six new players to their squad, the north London side will be desperate to make a powerful statement in their first game of the season. And so, a win will be their barest expectation for this game.

Possible Tottenham starting line-up

Hugo Lloris; Cristian Romero, Eric Dier, Clement Lenglet; Ivan Perisic, Rodrigo Bentancur, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Matt Doherty; Dejan Kulusevski, Harry Kane, Heung-Min Son.

Injured: Oliver Skipp

Doubtful: Yves Bissouma

Suspended: Richarlison

Southampton

After a disastrous ending to last season, Southampton will look to begin the 2022/23 season with a win when they travel to north London on Saturday.

The Saints were one of four clubs to take points off Tottenham in both 2021/22 PL clashes but still ended the season with four consecutive losses. The visitors carried their poor ending to the season into their preseason games as they won just one of five friendly games, losing two and drawing the other two.

Having lost a few members of his coaching staff, but remaining in charge, Ralph Hasenhüttl will be desperate to avoid a disastrous start this season. The Austrian is living on borrowed time at the Saint Mary’s Stadium and will be hoping that he can begin the season on a high note to avoid being the first manager to get sacked this season.

His first challenge will now be to prove that last season’s 3-2 win at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was no fluke after losses in their six prior games away to Spurs (all competitions).

Possible Southampton starting line-up

Gavin Bazunu; Kyle Walker-Peters, Jan Bednarek, Mohammed Salisu, Romain Perraud; James Ward-Prowse, Stuart Armstrong, Joe Aribo, Mohamed Elyounoussi; Nathan Redmond, Che Adams.

Injured: Theo Walcott, Nathan Tella, Valentino Livermento

Doubtful: None

Suspended: None
