Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has revealed that he urged the Red Devils to sign Idrissa Gueye in 2017.
The England international joined Everton that year and after a month of playing with Gueye he realized that the midfielder is good enough to play for the Old Trafford outfit.
He spoke to the Manchester United officials regarding a transfer as well.
Gueye eventually joined Paris Saint-Germain and he has been a good player for them so far.
The defensive midfielder was a key player at Everton as well and he could have been a superb addition to Manchester United’s midfield.
Solskjaer needs a player of his quality right now. Matic is past his peak and the Serbian is a shadow of his former self.
A top-class defensive midfielder like Gueye would have improved United’s midfield a lot.
The Premier League giants probably regret not signing the player when they had the chance.
Rooney said to The Times: “Everyone talks about his tackling and energy but what surprised me was his quality on the ball — he always looked to play it forward and to your feet.
“After a month playing with him, I spoke to people at Manchester United saying he was good enough for them. I wasn’t shocked when Paris Saint-Germain signed him.”
It will be interesting to see if Manchester United try and sign a good defensive midfielder this summer. They have two excellent playmakers like Pogba and Fernandes now and a top-class defensive midfielder would complete their midfield.
