The AC Milan ace could miss the first few games of the 2021/22 season.
AC Milan star Zlatan Ibrahimovic is expected to be out for two months after undergoing keyhole surgery on his left knee.
The Swede picked up a knee injury during last season’s Serie A clash against Juventus, which eventually ruled him out for the Euro 2020 despite making a surprise return from retirement.
The 2021/22 Serie A season will commence on August 22, and Ibrahimovic could miss a handful of games for Rossoneri, with whom he had agreed to a contract extension until next summer.
A statement from AC Milan read: “Zlatan Ibrahimović underwent an arthroscopic lavage to his left knee at the UPMC Salvator Mundi International Hospital in Rome.
The procedure carried out by surgeons Volker Musahl and Fabrizio Margheritini, and overseen by AC Milan medical chief Doctor Stefano Mazzoni and the Club’s orthopaedic consultant Roberto Pozzoni, was a success.
Zlatan is doing well and will start his rehabilitation immediately.”
Milan secured the Champions League qualification after a long-time following an impressive 2020/21 season. Ibrahimovic was the driving force as the 39-year-old defied his age to rack up goals consistently. Perhaps, the former Manchester United star mustered a total of 15 goals in 19 Serie A games he played, and he could have ended up in the top three of the scoring charts had he not been hindered by injuries.
Milan have a lot of firepower in their attack in order to cope up with the absence of Ibrahimovic, but the Swede’s experience is crucial going into the Champions League.
AC Milan have released Mario Mandzukic and are currently in discussion with Olivier Giroud of Chelsea for a free transfer this summer.
