Verona

It has been a very bad season for Verona, who come into this tie looking for just their second win in the Serie A season.

The Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi side finished 9th in Serie A last season under Igor Tudor, but find themselves sitting at the bottom of the table after 13 games having lost ten league games (W1, 2).

Their 2-0 loss to newly promoted Monza last weekend made it eight losses in a row for the first time in their history. There appears little let-up in sight before the World Cup break as 36-time Italian top-flight winners Juventus visit the Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi.

However, Verona have a good record in this fixture in recent times, as they have won three of their last five Serie A home H2Hs against Juve (D1, L1), perhaps leaving them cautiously optimistic about ending their losing run.

It is hard to find much encouragement for Verona in recent weeks, but they can perhaps take heart from the fact their only win this season came at home with a 2-1 result against Sampdoria.

They’ve been on the receiving end of a 2-1 scoreline in four of their last six games though so it’s perhaps no surprise to learn they are one of just two sides going into this round without a Serie A clean sheet in 2022/23.

Possible Verona starting line-up

Lorenzo Montipò; Federico Ceccherini, Koray Günter, Pawel Dawidowicz; Fabio Depaoli, Adrien Tameze, Miguel Veloso, Josh Doig; Yayah Kallon, Simone Verdi; Thomas Henry.

Injured: Ajdin Hrustic, Adkins Hurisic, Marco Davide Faraoni

Doubtful: Diego Cappola, Ivan Ilic

Suspended: Giangiacomo Magnani

Juventus

Juventus will look to continue their redemption of the Serie A season when they play Verona.

The visitors haven’t had a season as disastrous as Verona’s, but they are far behind where they would have aimed for when the season started. Currently, Maximiliano Allegri’s men are sitting ten points behind leaders Napoli after 13 rounds.

An embarrassing three-point haul in the UEFA Champions League certainly hasn’t helped matters, and having transferred into the Europa League, Juventus now face the prospect of a heavy Thursday-Sunday schedule in the new year.

They will get a taste of what is to come this week as this game falls on a Thursday, a day that hasn’t been fruitful for Juventus in Serie A, who have won just one of their last seven games on that day (D2, L4).

However, they come into this game on the back of four successive SA victories ‘to nil’, and so will be heavily fancied to win this game and to secure a fifth straight league win for the first time since 2020.

Possible Juventus starting line-up

Wojciech Szczesny; Danilo, Leonardo Bonucci, Bremer; Juan Cuadrado, Nicolò Fagioli, Manuel Locatelli, Adrien Rabiot, Filip Kostic, Angel Di Maria; Arkadiusz Milik.

Injured: Dusan Vlahovic, Samuel Iling, Paul Pogba, Marley Ake, Kaio Jorge, Mattia De Sciglio

Doubtful: None
