Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea: Blues crash out of the League Cup on penalties

Chelsea crashed out of the Carabao Cup after a penalty shootout defeat to Tottenham earlier today.

Timo Werner handed the away side a well deserved lead in the first half but the Blues failed to build on that. Chelsea had their chances to increase the advantage but the likes of Mount squandered important opportunities.

Eventually, Jose Mourinho’s side got back into the game through Erik Lamela and won the game in penalties.

Mason Mount missed the only penalty for Chelsea.

The Blues will be thoroughly disappointed with their exit from the League cup especially after their massive summer outlay. The League cup was probably their best chance of winning a trophy this season and it will be interesting to see if Lampard can deliver after the backing he has received from the club in the transfer market.

A club of Chelsea’s stature should be winning trophies every year but they have been quite mediocre for a while now. Lampard will be under pressure to fix that.

The Blues need more quality in the final third and in defence. They lacked the final pass today and players like Ziyech could have made a big difference.

Similarly, a quality defence could have prevented a poor goal from Tottenham in the second half.

It will be interesting to see if Chelsea can tighten up defensively before the transfer window closes. They have been linked with the West Ham defensive midfielder Declan Rice after all.
