Iran and USA will look to get the three points that will take them to the next stage of the World Cup when they meet on Tuesday at the Al Thumama Stadium in Doha.

Venue: Al Thumama Stadium (Doha)

Key Statistics

Iran have kept five clean sheets in their last ten games.

Iran’s first win in the World Cup came back in 1998 against none other than the USA.

The USA have won just two of their last 14 World Cup matches (D6, L6).

They have won just one of their last seven games (D4, L1).

World Cup trivia: Mehdi Taremi’s penalty against England was the latest goal in regular time of a World Cup game, arriving in the 103rd minute. They also scored in the 98th and 101st minute versus Wales.

Iran will look to make it two wins in two World Cup games when they face The United States on Tuesday.

The Middle East nation are on the brink of making history as they aim to progress to the knockout stages for the first time in their history.

Achieving that would be monumental especially given the extraordinary backdrop to their campaign as rising tension in the country continues to prove divisive amongst both the players and the fans, often evident during the pre-match national anthem.

After being made the laughing stock of the world when they were humiliated by England, Iran bounced back from that 6-2 defeat to the Three Lions with a brilliant late show to beat Wales last time out.

The 2-0 win over Gareth Bale’s Wales was their first-ever World Cup victory over European opposition and put them contention for a place in the next round of the World Cup. They currently sit in second position in their group and could seal a place in the next round if they win this game. Even a draw will be enough if Wales fails to beat England in the group’s other contest.

In pursuit of that goal, Carlos Queiroz’s side have some history in their favour, as Iran’s first win on the World Cup stage came back in 1998 against none other than the USA.

Possible Iran starting line-up

Seyed Hossein Hosseini, Ramin Rezaeian, Majid Hosseini, Morteza Pouraliganji, Milad Mohammadi, Ehsan Haji Safi, Ahmad Nourollahi, Ali Gholizadeh, Saeid Ezatolahi, Sardar Azmoun, Mehdi Taremi.

The United States kept their chances of progressing to the next round of the World Cup with a brave display in round two.

The Stars and Stripes arrive this crunch clash in good spirits as they produced another impressive display to hold England to a goalless draw.

Much like their opponents, victory here would send Gregg Berhalter’s men into the knockout stages of the World Cup. But unlike Iran, only a win will do for the USA.

They have history behind them as progression to the knockout stage is something they’ve managed in each of their last two finals appearances, although they were knocked out in the last 16 on both occasions.

However, they come into this game without a win in five games, with their last success coming against Grenada in June (D4, L1 since). Goals have been the main stumbling block, netting just twice in those five games, including a stoppage-time equaliser against minnows El Salvador.

Possible USA starting line-up

Matt Turner, Sergino Dest, Walker Zimmerman, Tim Ream, Antonee Robinson, Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie, Yunus Musah, Timothy Weah, Haji Wright, Christian Pulisic.
