The battle of Britain’s two World Cup representatives, Wales and England, comes up this Tuesday when both sides meet at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium.

Venue: Ahmad bin Ali Stadium (Al Rayyan)

Key Statistics

Wales are winless in their last seven games (D2, L5).

They have won just one of their last ten games (D3, L6).

England have scored two or more goals in eleven of their last 20 matches.

The Three Lions have kept ten clean sheets in their past 20 matches.

World Cup trivia: England have played out more 0-0 draws than any other nation in World Cup history (12).

Head to head

Wales have lost their last six head-to-head games against England by an aggregate 11-1 scoreline.

Wales

After an impressive second-half showing in their first World Cup game in Qatar, which earned them a 1-1 draw against the USA, Wales produced a shocking second-half display in their last match as they conceded two late goals to lose 2-0 to Iran.

The Dragon’s hopes of reaching the last 16 took a big hit last Friday when Iran beat them after first-choice goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey to a straight red card.

And so they come into this fixture needing to secure all three points in this contest and hope Iran and USA draw in the group’s other match to progress to the next round. Rob Page’s men would qualify no matter what happens in Group B’s other game if they can defeat the Three Lions by 4+ goals.

The chances of that happening seem pretty far-fetched, though, given the Dragons are without a win in seven matches across all competitions (D2, L5), which is their longest such run since May 2003.

Their record against England does not also inspire confidence, as they have lost six straight H2Hs by an aggregate 11-1 scoreline. However, in their three previous major tournament appearances, Wales have never exited the competition without winning at least one game, so they might as well get a win here to at least seal a solid ending to their World Cup campaign.

Possible Wales starting line-up

Danny Ward, Chris Mepham, Joe Rodon, Ben Davies, Connor Roberts, Aaron Ramsey, Ethan Ampadu, Neco Williams, Gareth Bale, Harry Wilson, Kieffer Moore.

England

England blew their chance of qualifying for the knockout round of the World Cup with a poor showing against the USA last time out.

The Three Lions were held to a goalless draw against the Americans, with their toothless performance at Al Bayt Stadium attracting boos from their supporters.

After the game, a defiant Gareth Southgate vowed “external noise” wouldn’t impact his England side, who are still in command of their destiny and can book their place in the knockout stage with just a draw in this contest.

However, pressure will be on Southgate’s side to finish their group stage campaign with a bang and win Group B, especially as they are playing against an old foe like Wales.

Wins have been hard to come by for England recently, though, with their 6-2 victory against Iran their only win in their last eight matches (D4, L3). That is their joint-fewest number of wins across an eight-game span since a run between October 2001 and June 2002.

Possible England starting line-up

Jordan Pickford, Kieran Trippier, John Stones, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden, Raheem Sterling, Harry Kane.

Doubtful: None

Suspended: None
