Tottenham Hotspur

Founded In: 5 September 1882

Nick Name: The Lilywhites

Slogan: To dare is to do

Ground: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium(Capacity- 62,850)

Opening: 3 April 2019

Owners: ENIC International Ltd.

The club was originally known as Hotspur Football Club and was established on September 5, 1882, by a group of schoolboys led by Bobby Buckle. Tottenham won the FA Cup for the first time in 1901, becoming the first non-League team to do so since the Football League was established in 1888.

To avoid confusion with another London team called Hotspur, whose post had been mistakenly sent to North London, the club was renamed “Tottenham Hotspur Football Club” in April 1884. The club started playing professional football in 1895 and started in division one as a part of the southern league.

In October 1958, Bill Nicholson took over as chairman. In the early 1960s, he became the club’s most prolific boss, leading the team to major trophy success three seasons in a row. Tottenham was the first club in the twentieth century to win both the League and FA Cup in the 1960–61 season. They became the first British club to win a UEFA club competition, the European Cup Winners’ Cup, in 1963, after successfully defending the FA Cup in 1962.

Tottenham was one of the five clubs that lobbied for the Premier League to be established, which was approved by The Football Association. Spurs finished second in the league under Pochettino in 2016–17, their best finish since 1962–63.

Tottenham has been the home for many legends. Likes of Glenn Hoddle, Jimmy Greaves, Danny Blanchflower have played for the club. Glenn Hoddle was regarded as one of his generation’s most gifted footballers. One of the best Tottenham Hotspur players of all time is Robert Dennis “Danny” Blanchflower. In the 1960-61 double-winning season, he led the team as captain. Modern-day greats like Harry Kane and Dele Alli have also played for the club.

With 266 goals, Jimmy Peter Greaves is Tottenham Hotspur’s all-time leading scorer. The club’s top appearance maker is Stephen John Perryman. In his 18-year career, he has made a club-record 854 appearances.

The North-London derby is one of the most ferocious derbies in world football, as it pits two North London clubs, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal, against each other. As Arsenal moved to North London in 1913, the rivalry began. This rivalry stems from Tottenham fans’ belief that Arsenal is invading their territory.
