Macarthur 2-2 Western Sydney Wanderers: Simon Cox rescues a draw for Wanderers

Simon Cox-Western Sydney Wanderers

Both the teams shared spoils after a thrilling A-League encounter at Campbelltown Sports Stadium.

Western Sydney Wanderers managed to secure a 2-2 draw against Macarthur, with Simon Cox scoring a late equaliser.

Aleksandar Jovanovic opened the account for the hosts in the 18th minute after netting a near-post header from Benat Etxebarria’s corner kick.

Tate Russels curled a left-footed effort to try and put Wanderers on level terms but the shot was denied by a stunning save from Federici.

Macarthur’s Derbyshire pulled off a brilliant finish in the added minutes of the first half but it was ruled out as offside in the end.

Wanderers started the second half on a positive note when Graham Dorrans scored the equaliser, catching Bulls’ defence and keeper Federici off-guard before sending the ball to the nets.

However, Bulls cancelled out Dorrans’ beautiful strike after centre-back Susnjar restored the lead from a header.

Wanderers, who pushed for the equaliser, found themselves unlucky on one occasion when Ibini Isei’s shot was denied by Federici and the sequence followed produced little to no effect.

However, their perseverance got paid off after Simon Cox’s header, resulting from Keanu Baccus’ brilliant back-heel flick.

Bulls’ dreams of reaching the top three were thwarted by Wanderers, who are now sitting fourth in the table.

Macarthur have failed to recover from their humiliating defeat to Sydney FC last week and they currently trail Wanderers by a point. They will face leaders Brisbane Roars in their next fixture.
