Western United 0–0 Adelaide United: Stalemate in an entertaining season opener

Western United vs Adelaide United

Both the sides failed to score a goal despite creating more chances

Western United and Adelaide United have shared spoils after a goalless draw in the season opener of A-League.

Adelaide were on the front foot for the most of the first half, with striker Tomi Juric saw his shot getting cleared off the goal line.  The hosts looked dangerous at the end of the first half as Alessandro Diamanti had his shot denied by James Delianov. The Adelaide keeper was soon called into action when he scrambled to collect the ball after a dangerous looking corner from Diamanti again.

The visitors were unfortunate once again in the second half when Ben Halloran’s striker was denied on the goal line by Aaron Calver.

Adelaide fielded a lineup half of youngsters and they would be disappointed to get away with a draw despite coming close on two occasions.

The defence of both the sides has to be lauded for producing a stalemate in the opening game of the A-League.

It was a special evening for striker Juric as he returned to Adelaide after seven long years. The 29-year-old represented Adelaide for a season alone before leaving them in 2013. He spent his last season at Russian club CSKA Sofia.

Carl Veart, the Reds coach, would be happy with his side’s performance albeit the result. Veart was appointed the full-time manager of Adelaide after serving as the assistant coach in the final few weeks of the last season.
