Emil Forsberg stars in Leipzig’s 3-1 win over Mainz
RB Leipzig have won their first game of Bundesliga, beating Mainz 3-1 at Red Bull Arena today.
Julian Nagelsmann’s side were on the front foot from the start of the game, with Emil Forsberg netting a penalty after the foul on Dani Olmo. Yussuf Poulsen went on to score the second goal of the game, assisted by the Spanish winger Olmo, who was very involved in the game.
Mainz tried to make a comeback after Mateta scored a goal in the opening minutes of the second half, beautifully set up by Robin Quaison, however, their hopes were cut short by Amadou Haidara. Forsberg provided the assist this time and the Swedish playmaker enjoyed a great outing.
Die Roten Bullen have made this even without Timo Werner, their star player over the course. The German forward joined Chelsea after around four years at Leipzig.
Hwang Hee-Chan, who was signed as a replacement for Werner, made his debut against Mainz, coming in as a substitute for Olmo. The South Korean star showed a glimpse of his talent despite not finding the score-sheet. Hwang enjoyed a great season with Salzburg last term and is poised to make his impact in the Bundesliga.
Nagelsmann’s side looked with the same hunger and instinct as they did in the previous season.
Leipzig stole the limelight after their fairy-tale run in the Champions League last season, reaching the semi-finals of the competition. They were able to defeat the likes of Tottenham and Atletico Madrid in the process.
The Red Bulls will face Bayer Leverkusen in their next fixture at BayArena.
