Barcelona are set to appoint former midfielder Xavi Hernandez as the club’s new manager.

The Spanish giants recently sacked Ronald Koeman after a series of disappointing performances and Xavi will be expected to turn things around.

Barcelona are currently 9th in the league table with just 16 points from 11 league matches and they are trailing league leaders Real Sociedad by 14 points.

A club of their stature should be challenging for the league title every season but it seems that the title race could be beyond them this year. The priority for Xavi Hernandez should be to get the Catalan giants into the top four and secure Champions League qualification.

The former La Liga international was the manager of Qatari club Al Sadd who have now agreed to allow him to return to Nou Camp.

Al Sadd have confirmed the move officially and a statement on their Twitter account revealed that the club administration has released Xavi following payment of the release clause.

The 41-year-old has done an impressive job at the Qatari club and it will be interesting to see if he can galvanise the team and lift the spirits around the club.

There is no doubt that Barcelona have some talented players at their disposal and they are in need of a manager with fresh ideas.

Xavi knows the club well from his time as a player and the fans are likely to relate to him as well.

Barcelona needed to bring in someone who could unite the fans and the players at this difficult moment and Xavi seems like an ideal appointment on paper.
