Aston Villa appoint Steven Gerrard as their new manager

Scottish side's progress under the management of Steven Gerrard shows that the former Liverpool player is already doing better than the likes of Frank Lampard, Mikel Arteta and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as a manager.

The former English midfielder leaves Scottish club Rangers to join Villans.

Aston Villa have confirmed Steven Gerrard as their new manager after sacking Dean Smith, reports The Guardian.

Smith got his marching orders after losing five consecutive games in the Premier League, which currently leaves Villa at 16th place in the table this season.

Gerrard had been continuously linked with a move to Villa Park in the last few days before the Lions confirmed his signing today.

The former Liverpool legend has agreed to a new three-and-a-half-year deal with the Blue and Claret army.

Gerrard commenced his managerial career with Rangers FC in 2018 and he led the Gers to the Scottish Premiership title last season, which ended the dominance of arch-rivals Celtic.

The 41-year-old leaves the Ibrox Stadium midway through the season, with Villans agreeing to pay the Scottish club a compensation fee of around 4m pounds.

Following his appointment, Gerrard praised Villans’ rich history and also vowed to take the club to newer heights.

The former Three Lions star said: “Aston Villa is a club with a rich history and tradition in English football and I am immensely proud to become its new head coach. In my conversations with [the owners] Nassef [Sawiris], Wes [Edens] and the rest of the board, it was apparent how ambitious their plans are for the club and I am looking forward to helping them achieve their aims.

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to everybody associated with Glasgow Rangers for giving me the opportunity to manage such an iconic football club. Helping them secure a record-breaking 55th league title will always hold a special place in my heart. I would like to wish the players, staff and supporters the very best for the future.”

Gerrard’s first game as Villa’s new boss will be against Brighton in the Premier League next weekend.
