The Portuguese ace started on the bench in Manchester United’s 1-1 draw against Chelsea in the Premier League last night.

Manchester United‘s interim boss Michael Carrick has explained why he left Cristiano Ronaldo out of the starting 11 against Chelsea.

The Portuguese star’s exclusion raised a few eyebrows given that he has been United’s standout player in an otherwise lacklustre season. Furthermore, the 36-year-old was coming off an impressive Champions League outing against Villarreal, where he registered his sixth goal of the group stage this season.

Carrick has said that the decision is completely based on the game plan and added that he spoke about it to Ronaldo prior to the game.

Carrick said (h/t Goal): “A few tweaks and changes from the other night, to change things up a bit.

“Cristiano is probably our standout name, but it’s just gameplan, ideas. I had a good chat with Cristiano actually, he was great, and we’ve decided to go like that today. Really looking forward to the game.

“It’s a decision just to pick a team, to be honest. I don’t think it needs more drama than that.

“Everyone is fine, all the boys who have come out of the team have been terrific around the place, Cristiano included, fantastic with the boys, supporting them 100 per cent and ready to come on if and when needed.

“We’re happy with the team we’ve picked, for sure. We’ve come here to try and win the game, like we do every single game.”

Jadon Sancho opened the account for the Red Devils at Stamford Bridge but only to be cancelled out by Jorginho from the penalty spot.

Ronaldo was brought in after the hour mark but failed to any kind of inspiration, as the Red Devils had to settle for a draw against the Premier League leaders.

The former Juventus star seemed to be not happy with the result as he stormed off the pitch after the final whistle.

It was not the first time Ronaldo didn’t make it to the starting Xl as he experienced a similar situation against Everton earlier this season.

Coincidentally, United were held to a 1-1 draw by the Toffees in that game too.
