Coronavirus outbreak: Premier League clubs report 42 positive cases over the last week

Premier League spot up for grabs on Championship final day

The Premier League is currently suffering from a spike in Coronavirus infections and there have been 42 positive cases reported over the last week.

According to Rob Harris from Associated Press, the 42 Coronavirus infections reported recently is the highest number reported in a week since testing figures began in May 2020.

Throughout the week there have been reports that clubs like Aston VillaTottenham Hotspur and Manchester United have had a Coronavirus outbreak.

Tottenham had to postpone their Premier League clash against Brighton and they were unable to participate in the midweek European clash against Rennes either.

It will be interesting to see how the Premier League authorities cope with the rising number of cases throughout the country and whether the league is temporarily halted so that the infections are controlled.

There have been reports that the clubs could ask their players to get the booster jabs in the coming weeks. There is likely to be more regular testing as well.

If the Premier League is halted for the time being, it would result in a massive financial loss.  TV companies are likely to demand a return on their payments regarding broadcasting rights.

Furthermore, if the games are played behind closed doors, clubs would miss out on matchday revenue once again.

Footballing clubs across the globe have only just started to recover from their losses incurred due to the initial pandemic and the latest Coronavirus outbreak will come as a devastating blow for them.
