The ex-Liverpool boss has been identified as the replacement for Carlo Ancelotti.
Everton are reportedly closing in on appointing former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez as their new manager.
The Toffees have been scouring the managerial options after Carlo Ancelotti left the club to join Real Madrid.
While many names have been linked to Goodison Park – the likes of Nuno Santo and Galtier, the Toffees are looking to go with Benitez.
The Toffees’ fans have been voicing their opinions against Benitez – due to the Liverpool past – ever since his links surfaced.
The Spanish gaffer manager had his stint as the Reds’ boss between 2004 and 2010, and he was notoriously known for his comments – calling Everton a small club – he made after the Merseyside derby in 2007.
Notwithstanding the fans’ discontent, the owner of Premier League Farhad Moshiri is set to hand Benitez a contract at Goodison Park.
The 61-year-old has been without a job since he left the Chinese Super League club Dalian Professional after two years. His previous stint in England was with Newcastle United before he moved to China in 2019.
The Toffees looked like a club on the rise, but Ancelotti’s departure has left them in dire straits.
Although an experienced coach, Benitez has been deemed obsolete by many due to his pragmatic style. Furthermore, the Spaniard would rely on expensive transfer signings, which Everton couldn’t afford due to their financial crisis.
Everton will look to have a new manager before the pre-season commences, and it will be interesting to what the consequences would be if Benitez takes over at Goodison Park.
Fan Reactions could impact club decision
The transfer could be off as per talkSPORT. Its is reported that the club bosses listened to fans protests, specifically the fans have not forgotten his comments , while he was manager of Liverpool.
