Everton

Everton will look to begin their first game under Duncan Ferguson with a win when they welcome Aston Villa to Goodison Park.

The Toffees parted ways with former Liverpool boss, Rafa Benitez, on Sunday after a disappointing 2-1 loss to Norwich City on Saturday. The loss was Everton’s sixth loss in their last ten games (W2, D2).

Since their 2-1 win over Arsenal in early December the hosts have not won a game in 90 minutes. They currently sit in 16th place, just five points behind Norwich in 18th.

Club legend Duncan Ferguson is now tasked to restore Everton’s fortune as a top-half team and he will be hoping for a repeat of his first ‘debut’ on the touchline, which saw Everton beat Chelsea 3-1 in December 2019.

But the former Benitez assistant has a big task on his hands as Everton have failed to breach the 20-point mark by the halfway point for the first time since 2005/06.

Possible Everton starting line-ups

Jordan Pickford; Seamus Coleman, Ben Godfrey, Michael Keane, Vitali Mykolenko; Andre Gomes, Abdoulaye Doucoure, Allan; Demarai Gray, Richarlison, Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Injured: Tom Davies, Fabian Delph

Aston Villa

Steven Gerrard will travel to Merseyside to face one of his old enemies. The former Liverpool captain is familiar with this venue, having faced Everton 33 times in his career. In those 33 games, he won 17 times and lost only five times, while scoring ten goals.

He comes to Goodison Park with his side in a confident mode following a 2-2 draw with Manchester United in the last Premier League outing. After going two goals down, Villa fought back in the second half with January signing, Philippe Coutinho playing a key role with one goal and as an assist.

The result ended a three-game losing run for the ‘Villans’ who come into this tie sitting in 13th place. They have taken four points from the six available at Goodison Park since the club’s PL return in 2019 and will fancy their chances of getting another positive result from this game.

However, the visitors have won just one of their last five PL matches overall (D1, L3), twice losing after netting the opener.

Possible Aston Villa starting line-ups

Emiliano Martinez, Matty Cash, Ezri Konsa, Tyrone Mings, Lucas Digne; Jacob Ramsey, Douglas Luiz, John McGinn; Philippe Coutinho, Ollie Watkins, Danny Ings.

Injured: Leon Bailey, Marvelous Nakamba, Ashley Young

Unavailable (AFCON): Bertrand Traore, Trezeguet
