Newcastle United have been heavily linked with a move for the Lyon midfielder Bruno Guimaraes in recent weeks.

The Premier League side are keen on signing the defensive midfielder before the January transfer window closes, and it seems that they are now closing in on his signature.

According to a report via GFFN, the two clubs are close to agreeing on a fee of around €52 million for the 24-year-old Brazilian midfielder.

Bruno has established himself as a key player for the French club, but Lyon are going through some financial difficulties, and they are prepared to cash in on the midfielder this month.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United are fighting relegation in the Premier League, and they will need to improve their squad significantly to beat the drop.

The magpies are now one of the richest clubs on the planet following their takeover, and the new owners seem determined to improve the squad this month.

Newcastle have already signed the likes of Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood earlier this month. It remains to be seen whether they can bring in a quality attacking midfielder before the window closes.

They have been linked with the likes of Dele Alli and Jesse Lingard to improve their options in the final third.

Meanwhile, Guimaraes has been outstanding in the French league for Lyon, and he has the technical ability to succeed in the Premier League. He will add composure and defensive discipline at the heart of Eddie Howe’s midfield.

Newcastle have an ambitious project at their disposal, and the Brazilian is likely to be tempted to move to St James’s Park this month.

It remains to be seen whether the defensive midfielder can settle in quickly and make an immediate impact in the Premier League once the transfer is formalised.
