Newcastle United have been linked with a host of players in recent months, and the latest name linked with a move to St James’s Park is that of Sven Botman.

According to a report from the Telegraph, the magpies are keen on signing the Dutch international defender, but Lille are not keen on letting the player leave midway through the season.

A fee of around £30 million has been discussed, and it will be interesting to see whether the Premier League side can convince the French outfit to change their stance and sell the player this month.

Botman is highly rated around Europe, and he could prove to be a sensational long term acquisition for Newcastle.

The magpies are currently battling relegation, and they have been vulnerable at the back all season. Bringing in a quality defender like Botman could transform their season and help them tighten up at the back.

The Lille defender has already proven his quality in France, and he might be tempted to try out a new challenge, especially in the Premier League.

However, a move to Newcastle from Lille would be a step down given the current circumstances, and it remains to be seen whether the player is willing to take a downward step in his career right now.

A player of his calibre is likely to have other suitors, and Newcastle will have to move swiftly to secure his services.
