Newcastle United have reportedly sent scout Geoff Lockhart to Germany to watch Bayer Leverkusen wonderkid Florian Wirtz.

The Magpies are reportedly interested in the 18-year-old, who is also attracting interest from a host of Europe’s top clubs, including Manchester United and Arsenal.

And according to German outlet Sport Bild, Premier League side Newcastle sent a club scout to watch the midfielder during Leverkusen’s 2-2 draw with Cologne last weekend.

Wirtz has made an explosive start to the 2021-22 campaign and has scored six goals and provided six assists in 12 outings for Leverkusen so far.

Following their takeover by a Saudi-led consortium, Newcastle have been linked with a vast number of high-profile names, with Wirtz the latest name in their list of potential signings. The new owners have a lot of money to spend and are looking to make Newcastle one of the biggest in Europe.

However, according to Bild, a move for Wirtz may not be in the pipeline just yet, with Leverkusen having no plans to sell the youngster. The German side have also put a €100million (£84m) valuation on the player and can only sell in 2023 at the earliest.

The report by the news outlet also states that several clubs have sent scouts to assess Wirtz this season, including Premier League sides Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham, and La Liga heavyweights Atlético Madrid, Real Madrid and Barcelona.
