Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane has been linked with a move away from the Spanish club this summer, and Manchester United are thought to be closing in on an agreement.

According to reports, the 28-year-old has entered the final year of his contract, and he will be a free agent at the end of next season.

Real Madrid have not managed to secure a contract extension with the French international yet, and Manchester United are looking to make the most of his situation and snap him up in the coming weeks.

The Spanish club value the World Cup-winning defender at around €60 million, but Manchester United have offered a sum of €50 million for the player.

The report further states that it is only a matter of time before Real Madrid and Manchester United finalise an agreement for the defender’s transfer.

The player is expected to earn around €10 million per season at Old Trafford, and he is yet to reach an agreement with the Premier League side regarding the contract.

However, those formalities are expected to be ironed out once the fee has been agreed upon with his club.

Manchester United need to improve their defensive options to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title next year. Someone like Varane could have a transformative effect on their defence just like Virgil van Dijk had at Liverpool.
