Manchester United crashed to a 2-0 defeat against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup semi-final last night and former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane has urged Bruno Fernandes to step up and deliver in the big games.
The Portuguese midfielder has been in sensational form since moving to Manchester United from Sporting Lisbon and he has picked up 27 goals and 17 assists for the Premier League side so far.
However, Bruno Fernandes was ineffective against Manchester City last night and he failed to turn up when his side needed his creativity the most.
It will be interesting to see if the Portuguese international and improve that side of his game and make his mark in the big games as well.
His impact at Old Trafford has been likened to that of Eric Cantona in the past and the expectations are understandably high around his performances.
Manchester United have now lost at the semi-final stage in the last four care about Cup campaigns and Roy Keane believes that the club is in need of one or two players to take the next step and win trophies.
He said: “It’s not easy winning football trophies. Fernandes has had praise for the last few months and people have been comparing him to Cantona. He didn’t really do much tonight.
“The top players turn up in the big occasions. And that’s what the Cantonas used to do” they get their hands on trophies. That’s where this team are a little bit short. They probably need one or two more players to come into this squad, no doubt, and they need the mentality and confidence of winning a semi-final to get them over the line”.
