Liverpool have agreed on a new long term deal with defender Virgil van Dijk.

The club have confirmed on their official website that the Dutch international has signed a new deal with the club until the summer of 2025.

Van Dijk has been an exceptional player for Liverpool since his arrival in January 2018 for a fee of around £75 million from Southampton.

The 30-year-old centre back has already helped Liverpool win the Premier League title and a Champions League.

He will be hoping to guide the Reds to more silverware in the coming seasons.

Speaking to the media after his contract extension, the player said: “Amazing. It is something to be very proud of, that I am very proud of, that my wife and my kids are very proud of and obviously my agency.

“All the hard work we’ve put in so far continues, and I am looking forward to what the future brings together with Liverpool. I’m delighted, very happy and proud.”

When he’s fit, Van Dijk is undoubtedly the best defender in the world, and the decision to tie him down to a long-term deal will certainly come as a delight to the fans.

The defender missed most of the last season with an ACL injury, but he’s fit and ready for the upcoming season.

The Dutchman is in contention to start against Norwich City tomorrow, and it will be interesting to see if he can stay injury-free and help the Reds challenge for the Premier League title this time around.

Liverpool struggled without him last season, and his return from injury will be a timely boost for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The Reds have recently agreed on new deals with Trent Alexander Arnold, Alisson Becker and Fabinho as well.
