West Ham United

West Ham United will look to begin their 2022/23 Premier League season with a huge statement win when they welcome defending champions Manchester City to London.

The Hammers are coming off of a season that will forever be etched in the hearts of their fans and players given the spectacular highs (the run to the Europa League semi finals) and disappointments (the slip-ups down the stretch that cost them a top-six finish) that greeted the season.

They return to Premier League action looking to begin on a winning note to give them early momentum in the race for a top-six finish. Having bolstered their forward line with the addition of Italian striker Gianluca Scamacca, who netted 16 times in Serie A (SA) last season, David Moyes will fancy his side’s chances of competing with the traditional top-six for a place in Europe next season.

However, his side have a poor record against the Champions as they have never beaten Pep Guardiola’s side in the league at the London Stadium.

They also have a poor record in their opening league games. But after beating Newcastle 4-2 on opening day last season, they will be optimistic of recording back-to-back PL matchday one wins for the first time since 2013/14.

Possible West Ham starting line-up

Lukasz Fabianski; Kurt Zouma, Craig Dawson, Aaron Cresswell; Vladimir Coufal, Tomas Soucek, Declan Rice, Arthur Masuaku; Pablo Fornals, Manuel Lanzini; Jarrod Bowen.

Injured: None

Doubtful: Nayef Aguerd, Issa Diop

Suspended: None

Manchester City

Manchester City will look to begin their title defence with a win when they travel to London this Sunday for their crunch meeting with West Ham United.

The Cityzens pipped Liverpool to the title on the last day of last season, thanks to a comeback win that was inspired by Ilkay Gundogan.

Having lost their opening game of last season against Tottenham, they will be desperate to win this time and keep their momentum going. The reigning PL champions have lost their opening match in three of the last six seasons (W3).

They will be keen on a win that will also see them avoid going two games without a win as they come into this tie on the back of a disappointing 3-1 loss to Liverpool in the FA Community Shield.

But given that they are unbeaten in their last 18 PL games away from home (W14, D4), they will fancy their chances of bouncing back against West Ham, a team that they have beaten in five of their last eight league games.

Possible Manchester City starting line-up

Ederson Moraes, Kyle Walker, Ruben Dias, Nathan Ake, Joao Cancelo; Kevin De Bruyne, Rodri, Bernardo Silva; Riyad Mahrez, Phil Foden, Erling Haaland.

Injured: Aymeric Laporte

Doubtful: None

Suspended: None
