Wolverhampton Wanderers have reportedly agreed on a club-record deal to sign Sporting CP midfielder Matheus Nunes.

The Brazilian-born midfielder has been the subject of intense interest from Europe’s top clubs this summer and he is now finally on the move to the Premier League.

According to Sportsmail, Wolves have won the race for his signature, beating off competition from Liverpool and Manchester City. West Ham were also interested in his services with David Moyes revealing recently that West Ham had failed to persuade the player to move to the London Stadium.

Although Nunes reportedly rejected Wolves back in June as he waited to see what other options will materialise, he has now been persuaded to join the Molineux side who have a pool of Portuguese players.

Bruno Lage’s side have reportedly negotiated a five-year deal by the player agent Jorge Mendes, who has finalised a host of big deals for the Black Country outfit in recent years.

The deal for Nunes will reportedly cost Wolves €50m (£42.5m) including add-ons, surpassing the £35m they paid for Fabio Silva last summer.

The deal for the 23-year-old will take Wolves’ spending beyond the £100m mark, having paid out for Goncalo Guedes, Hwang Hee-chan, and Nathan Collins.

Last week, manager Lage indicated he wanted to sign ‘three or four more players before the end of the current transfer window.

“The words are patience and trust,” the Portuguese said on Friday.

“Patience because we still have 20 days to the end of the transfer window.

“And trust in our work. Judge the work we are doing at the beginning of this season at the end of this transfer window.

“Some players go, some players are coming. I have big trust in the work we are doing and that we are going to convince three or four more players to come and play for Wolves.”
