RB Salzburg

Austrian champions RB Salzburg will look to begin their UCL knockout stage tie with a win when they welcome Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich to the Red Bull Arena on Wednesday.

The hosts come into this tie on the back of a 2-1 win over Rapid Vienna in the Austrian Bundesliga. The win was their ninth consecutive win in the Austrian top-flight and helped them open a 14 points lead at the top of the table.

With their league future secured, they will now look to continue their stay in the Champions League.

Matthias Jaissle’s side are making their first appearance in this stage of the competition. But their H2H record (L2) and previous form against German teams in the UCL (W1, D1, L4) will have them concerned.

In their previous six meetings with German sides, they conceded three goals on average, meaning that their backline will be greatly tested again here.

However, they will also be confident of getting a goal or two against Bayern after netting two or more goals in four of their previous five matches (W5).

Possible RB Salzburg starting line-up

Philipp Kohn, Rasmus Nissen Kristensen, Oumar Solet, Maximilian Wober, Andreas Ulmer, Nicolas Seiwald, Nicolas Capaldo, Mohamed Camara, Brenden Aaronson, Karim Adeyemi, Chukwubuike Adamu.

Injured: Bernardo, Ousmane Diakite, Sekou Koita, Albert Vallci, Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Okoh

Doubtful: Zlatko Junuzovic

Bayern Munich

After their shocking loss to Bochum in the German Bundesliga, Bayern Munich will be desperate to get back to winning ways in the Champions League when they travel to Salzburg on Wednesday.

The Bundesliga giants were defeated 4-0 by mid-table Bochum, reducing their lead at the top of the league table. Although the loss was shocking for most, it seemed to be coming for a long time as they have kept just one clean sheet in their last five games.

However, Julian Nagelsmann’s men will be confident of winning this tie. They come into this clash with a 100% winning record from the group stage after netting 22 goals across six fixtures.

They have progressed on all three previous occasions when facing Austrian sides in knockout European football. They are unbeaten in their last 2-1 UCL games at opposition grounds (W17, D4). During that streak, they netted an impressive 2.86 goals per outing, including a 6-2 away head-to-head victory during last season’s group stage.

Possible Bayern Munich starting line-up

Sven Ulreich, Benjamin Pavard, Niklas Sule, Dayot Upamecano, Lucas Hernandez, Marcel Sabitzer, Joshua Kimmich, Serge Gnabry, Thomas Muller, Kingsley Coman, Robert Lewandowski.

Injured: Leon Goretzka, Alphonso Davies, Manuel Neuer

Doubtful: Jamal Musiala
