Bruno Fernandes-Manchester United

United are set to lock horns with the Italian capital club in the semi-finals of the Europa League.

Stadium: Old Trafford

Key Statistics

  • The meeting will mark their seventh in European competitions, with Man United winning four times, losing only once ( 4 wins 1 loss 1 draw)
  • Roma had lost all of their previous three games at Old Trafford. This will be the first meeting in over a decade.
  • United hold a good track record against the Italian opposition, losing only one of their last 12 games. ( defeat at home against Juventus with Mourinho as United boss)
  • On the other hand, Roma hadn’t won any of their away games against English opponents in European competition. Their last win was against Liverpool in the 2001 UEFA Cup.

Manchester United

Manchester United have enjoyed a fantastic season, but their only chance of silverware is Europa League, having failed in FA Cup and are currently second in the Premier League table.

United’s road to the Europa League semi-final has been impressive after easing wins in the knockout phases against Real Sociedad and Granada.

Despite their recent lacklustre draw against Leeds United, the Red Devils will enter the game as the real favourites as Roma have slumped of late in Serie A.

Edinson Cavani will lead the attack in the absence of injured Anthony Martial, while Eric Bailly is in isolation after contracting COVID-19.

Possible line-ups

Dean Henderson, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Scott McTominay, Fred, Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani.

We have analysed [Roma] down to the ground since we drew them. We are one step away from the final. It is about putting things right. We have arrived with an almost fully-fit squad. Anthony Martial is still injured. We are going to go all out now. It will be a dream come true the day I can lift a trophy for this club as a manager. That is what we’re building for. It is ifs and buts, but our ambition is to finish this season with a trophy and to celebrate.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Manchester United manager

AS Roma

The Italian club’s chances of securing the Champions League football next season depends on winning the Europa League title as they are currently seventh in the Serie A table.

Paulo Fonseca’s side has suffered a big decline in the Italian top-flight despite dominating the top positions in the first half of the season.

However, their Europa League form remained flawless from the start, with their quarter-final victory coming against Dutch giants Ajax.

Chris Smalling is likely to miss his reunion with his former club due to a knee injury, while Roma can’t also avail the services of Leanardo Spinazzalo due to a thigh injury.

Possible line-ups

Pau Lopez; Juan Jesus, Bryan Cristante, Gianluca Mancini; Bruno Peres, Amadou Diawara, Jordan Veretout, Rick Karsdorp; Lorenzo Pellegrini, Henrikh Mkhitaryan; Edin Dzeko

It’s a very important match. We don’t always get to a semi-final, we understand the importance of the moment. This match is against a great team, perhaps the favourites to win the competition. We know it will be difficult, we respect Manchester United, but we are ambitious.

Paulo Fonseca, Roma manager
