Cameroon

Five-time AFCON champions Cameroon will look to go one step further in their remarkable AFCON campaign when they host Egypt in the semi-final round of the 2022 AFCON in Yaounde this Thursday.

The hosts, who have now reached this stage for the ninth time, meet Egypt – the only team to have won this competition more often than them (seven times) looking to inflict a second straight head-to-head defeat against the Pharaohs, who they beat in the 2017 AFCON final.

The Indomitable Lions come into this tie on the back of a 2-0 win over the Gambia. In a largely one-sided affair in the Japoma Stadium (Douala), Karl Toko Ekambi scored a brace for Cameroon to end Gambia’s run in the tournament.

The win means that Toni Conceicao’s side are now unbeaten in nine matches (W8, D1). They are bidding to make more history, having won each of their last eight AFCON semi-final outings without conceding.

Considering their home advantage and an impressive attack that has scored eleven goals so far, the hosts will come into this tie full of confidence that they can do it against Egypt.

Possible Cameroon starting line-up

Andre Onana; Collins Fai, Michael Ngadeu-Ngadjui, Jean-Charles Castelletto, Nouhou Tolo; André-Frank Anguissa, Samuel Gouet, Martin Hongla; Moumi Ngamaleu, Vincent Aboubakar, Karl Toko Ekambi.

Egypt

Egypt come into this tie on the back of a 2-1 win over Morocco in the quarter-final.

After going behind in the first half through Sofiane Boufal’s goal, Egypt came back in the second half through Mohamed Salah, who scored in the 53rd minute. When nothing could separate both teams at the normal time, the game went into extra time. But unlike in their last game against Ivory Coast when they had to win via penalty shootout, Egypt scored through Trezeguet in the 100th minute to send Egypt to this round.

The visitors qualified for the knockouts despite scoring just twice in the group stage (W2, L1), so although they haven’t hit top gear just yet, they’ve used all of their experience and guile to stay in the tournament.

However, they will be hoping for a more straightforward win this time around when they face Cameroon in Yaoundé on Thursday.

Possible Egypt starting line-up

Mohamed Sobhy; Omar Kamal, Mohamed Abdel Monem, Ayman Ashraf, Ahmed Fattouh; Amr El Solia, Mohamed Elneny, Hamdy Fathy; Mohamed Salah, Mostafa Mohamed, Omar Marmoush.

Injured: Mohamed El Shenawy, Mohamed Abou Gabal

Doubtful: None

Suspended: None
