The Saints will be delighted with a vital win at home and they are now well clear of the drop zone.
Hassenhuttl’s side could now aim for a top-half finish if they can win their remaining games. It will be interesting to see where they finish eventually.
Meanwhile, the defeat will come as a major blow to Manchester City. They managed to beat Liverpool convincingly last time out and they were expected to deal with Southampton comfortably here.
Che Adams scored the only goal of the game for the home side with a 40-yard stunner. It was his first goal in the Premier League and he will be elated that it was instrumental in getting his side the three points against one of the best teams in the world.
It will be interesting to see how Manchester City bounces back from this.
After their last game, the likes of Sterling and Foden claimed that they are now ready for the next season’s title race and they have shown their quality.
However, the defeat against Southampton is as humiliating as it can get for them, especially after their big claims since the Liverpool win.
City have now lost 9 games this season which is more than some of the teams below them in the table.
As for the Saints, they climb to 13th with 43 points.
