Leon Goretzka signs a contract extension with Bayern Munich until 2026

Leon Goretzka-Bayern Munich

After stalling for a long period, 26-year-old Leon Goretzka has finally put pen to paper with Bayern Munich, extending his current deal till 2026. While reports have been suggesting that the parties had agreed to personal terms a long way back, the news is now official.

The Bavarian giants confirmed through their social media outlets that their German midfielder would be staying at the Allianz Arena for the foreseeable future. Goretzka also issued a statement, ensuring Bayern fans of his imminent extension. He said,

“With FC Bayern, we have won everything there is to be won over the past three years. But confirming and repeating this success would be even nicer. We want to build on that in the next few years.”

Having swapped the Veltins Arena for Allianz Arena in 2018 on a free transfer, Goretzka has gone on to make 118 appearances for Bayern. Deployed in the double pivot slot alongside Joshua Kimmich, the former Schalke star has been an integral part of a rampant Bayern side of late.

Goretzka’s previous deal was set to expire in the summer of 2022. As a result, the central midfielder was heavily linked with a move away from Bayern, with Manchester United and Real Madrid being the predominant contenders. However, with his commitment to the club gaining official status, such rumours have been rendered irrelevant.

Bayern Munich recently handed Barcelona a humiliating 3-0 defeat at Camp Nou, with Goretzka proving to be an immovable force in the Bavarians’ midfield.
