Union Berlin

Freiburg will travel to the capital this Wednesday to face Union Berlin in one of the midweek fixtures of Round 16 of the 2021/22 Bundesliga season.

Venue: Stadion An der Alten Försterei (Berlin)

Key Statistics

Union Berlin are unbeaten in their last three home games.

The hosts have conceded just twelve goals in eight home games this season.

Their start striker Taiwo Awoniyi has scored a team-high nine goals this season. Only Robert Lewandowski (16), Patrik Schick (14) and Erling Haaland (11) have more league-wide.

The Nigeria striker has put his side 1-0 up five times already this season, more often than any other player in the league.

Union’s high press has forced five turnovers which have led to goals – more than any other side in Europe’s top five leagues.

SC Freiburg have taken 14 points from eight away games this season. Only Bayern Munich (16) and Leverkusen (15) have taken more.

The visitors have conceded the fewest goals for an away team in the Bundesliga this season – seven goals.

They have 15 goals on the road while they have scored 26 overall.

Head to head

Freiburg have not won Union Berlin since March 2020. But they edge their hosts in their all-time head-to-head record on goals scored (18-11). The teams have won four times each and drawn twice in 10 competitive meetings.

Union Berlin

After a disappointing week, Union Berlin will look to dust themselves up and get back to winning ways when they welcome Freiburg to the Stadion An der Alten Försterei this Wednesday.

The hosts were knocked out of the Europa Conference League last Thursday following a 1-1 draw with Slavia Prague before losing to bottom of the table Greuther Fürth in the Bundesliga last weekend.

They will be desperate to bounce back in this game and keep their chances of top-four finish alive.

Having taken just six points from a possible 21 on the road this term, Urs Fischer’s side will be relieved to be back on home soil where they have a good record in the league (W5, D2, L1).

They are currently sitting in sixth position and can climb into fifth above their visitors if they win this game.

Possible Union Berlin starting line-ups

Andreas Luthe; Marvin Friedrich, Robin Knoche, Timo Baumgartl; Niko Giesselmann, Grischa Promel, Rani Khedira, Julian Ryerson; Genki Haraguchi; Taiwo Awoniyi, Max Kruse.

Injured: Laurenz Dehl, Jakob Busk

Doubtful: Marvin Friedrich

Suspended: None

SC Freiburg

Freiburg will travel to Berlin looking to pick up maximum points. The visitors fell to a 2-1 defeat last Saturday after conceding in added time at home to Hoffenheim.

They will now look to bounce back after losing their top four placement due to the loss to their local rivals last weekend.

Christian Streich’s side remain in contention for a place in the Champions League next season and are coming into this tie sitting in fifth. They are just one point behind Hoffenheim in fourth and can get back to the top four if they win this game and Hoffenheim fail to win against Leverkusen.

And judging by their away from which has seen them win four of their away games so far (D2, L2), they will enter this tie confident that they can win.

Their last away game saw them beat Monchengladbach 6-0, but that has been their only win in the last five league games and should not give them a feeling that they are invincible. They know that they will have to dig deep to take home all three points in this game.

Possible SC Freiburg starting line-ups

Mark Flekken; Lukas Kubler, Philipp Lienhart, Nico Schlotterbeck; Christian Gunter; Vicenzo Grifo, Maximilian Eggestein, Nicolas Hofler, Kevin Schade; Ermedin Demirovic; Lucas Holer.

Injured: Jonathan Schmid

Doubtful: Yannik Keitel

Suspended: None
