Granada 1-2 Atletico Madrid: Correa’s late strike sees off Granada

Atletico Madrid

The Argentine forward cancelled out Yangel Herrera’s equaliser.

Atletico Madrid sealed three points after defeating Granada 2-1 away, with Angel Correa netting the winning goal.

The La Liga table leaders were held to a draw in their previous fixture against Celta Vigo despite Luis Suarez scoring a brace.

Although the Uruguayan striker couldn’t find the scoresheet against the exciting Granada side, Marcos Llorente put Atletico ahead in the 63rd minute and the goal marked his seventh of the season.

The visitors’ lead was only fleeting as Granada got back on the level terms through Yangel Herrera’s strike. Similar to Llorente, Herrera has been influential for this high-flying Granada side over the past two seasons and tonight was another instance to show his class, coming off the bench to score the equaliser.

Much to Granada’s dismay, Angel Correa put Los Rojiblancos once again on the front through a deflected effort, which proved to be decisive in the end.

The win allowed Diego Simeone’s side to extend their lead to eight points at the top of the La Liga table.

The game was another instance where Atletico’s squad depth was manifest as they were able to scrape wins even in the absence of differential talents like Joao Felix.

Atletico’s focus will now be on their next league games against Levante before they face Chelsea in the Champions League round of 16 tie. Having dominated the Spanish top-flight so far this season, Simeone’s men would look to replicate the success in the European games.
