Bruno Fernandes was prepared to quit Manchester United if they did not pull out of the ESL

Bruno Fernandes-Manchester United

Premier League giants Manchester United were one of the clubs involved in the formation of the European Super League.

The idea of the breakaway league was quickly disbanded after massive protests from the fans and pressure from footballing authorities.

According to the Athletic, Manchester United were under pressure from their own players as well.

The report states that Portuguese international Bruno Fernandes had threatened to push through a transfer away from the club if Manchester United persisted with the idea of the European Super League.

Eventually, all of the Premier League clubs had to pull out of the breakaway competition leaving the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus as the only clubs still backing the European Super League idea.

The clubs and the players participating in the European Super League were threatened with serious repercussions and competing in the tournament could have led to an exodus from their domestic leagues as well.

Fernandes has been exceptional for Manchester United ever since he joined the club from Sporting Lisbon and his departure would have been a massive blow for the Red Devils.

The 27-year-old midfielder has not only been the club’s best creator, he is also their most reliable goal scorer so far.

Fernandes has established himself as one of the best players in the world since his move to England and there would have been no shortage of suitors at the Portuguese international decided to force a transfer away from Old Trafford.
