Jamie Carragher urges Salah to sign a new Liverpool deal

Liverpool 4-3 Leeds Salah saves the blushes as Champions struggle to cope with Bielsa-ball

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has urged Mohamed Salah to sign a new Liverpool contract for the benefit of his own career.

The Egyptian’s Liverpool future is up in the air as he has just one year to run on his current contract despite an incredible record in Liverpool since his arrival in 2017. The winger has scored 155 goals in 252 games and has just won the Football Writers’ Player of the Year. But at the moment, he is in a contract stand-off with Liverpool and is increasingly looking like he will leave as many big teams in Europe circle.

Spanish giants Barcelona are thought to be keeping tabs on him, with the Nou Camp outfit having previously signed Philippe Coutinho for £145million from Liverpool in 2018

But Carragher has warned Salah against leaving Liverpool, sighting the demise of players who left Liverpool in the past. An example of such a player is the aforementioned Coutinho, who left Liverpool looking to win play in Spain.

However, the Brazilian playmaker failed to settle at the Nou Camp and is now on loan at Aston Villa ahead of a permanent £17m move.

Speaking to Sky Sports after Liverpool’s 2-1 win at Southampton, which Salah missed due to a slight knock, the former defender said;

“I think Salah should sign. He [Klopp] has turned good players into great players and Salah is one of them. This suits him. Jurgen Klopp suits him, but I think he should remember about two or three players who left and thought the grass was greener and then look at what they are doing this season.”

Meanwhile, former Liverpool captain Jamie Redknapp believes that while Salah is a key player in Jurgen Klopp’s team, he can be replaced by another star forward.

Salah’s high wage demands are reportedly the stumbling block that is preventing him from committing to an extended stay at Liverpool, but Redknapp insists no player should be earning more than defender Virgil van Dijk, who he thinks is the only player that is irreplaceable at the club.

“The players have the power. One thing I learned from being at this club is that they will reward you and look after you when you are doing well,” Redknapp added.

“But sometimes if we give him a big money… wouldn’t give anyone more money than Virgil van Dijk. He should be on the most. They will find another Mo Salah, but you won’t find another Van Dijk. There will always be another great striker who comes to this club.”
