Manchester City are looking to bring in a quality midfielder before the window closes and they have identified the Leeds United star, Kalvin Phillips, as a potential target.

The 26-year-old has established himself as one of the best defensive midfielders in the league. As per The Times, he is viewed as the ideal long-term replacement for Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho who left the club earlier.

Phillips has played in a high-pressing system under Marcelo Bielsa and he should be able to adapt to Pep Guardiola’s style with ease. Furthermore, he is an impressive passer from the deep and his press resistance will help City dominate proceedings against top teams.

Phillips has already proven himself in the Premier League with Leeds and he will want to test himself at a higher level now. The move to Manchester City will allow him to showcase his qualities in the Champions League next season. Also, the Premier League champions could help him fulfil his ambitions and win some silverware.

City nearly reached the finals of the Champions League last season and Guardiola will be desperate to go all the way this time around. Bringing in quality players this summer is a priority for City and they have started the window impressively. The English club have already splashed out on a world-class striker in Erling Haaland.

It will be interesting to see whether City can agree on a reasonable fee with Leeds for the England international midfielder now. Phillips is a key player for the club and a fan favourite at Elland Road. Leeds are likely to demand a premium for his services.
