Manchester United ‘are preparing a last offer to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona

Frenkie de Jong-Barcelona

Manchester United will make a final push to sign Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong according to reports.

The Old Trafford side are desperate to sign De Jong this summer and Erik ten Hag has instructed Old Trafford chiefs to pull out every possible stop to secure his top summer transfer target.

According to Spanish paper Sport, Manchester United are willing to make the midfielder the club’s highest-paid player by matching his current £450,000-a-week salary. They are also willing to pay the £17million the former Ajax midfielder is owed by Barcelona in deferred wages.

Manchester United’s transfer chiefs will reportedly try to meet the representatives of De Jong when Barcelona return from their pre-season tour of America.

So far, the issue surrounding outstanding wage payments has been the biggest stumbling point in efforts to bring de Jong to Old Trafford.

According to reports, Barca and United have already struck a deal worth £74million for De Jong, but the Dutch star is unwilling to swap Nou Camp for Old Trafford football.

For him to remain at Barca, De Jong will have to take a pay cut despite the financially stricken club spending over £100million on new players this summer.

The club have already signed Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski, Jules Kounde, Franck Kessie, and Andreas Christensen this summer.

Should Man United fail to land De Jong, Erik ten Hag has already started to target alternative players with Stuttgart striker Sasa Kalajdzic as well as Benjamin Sesko of Red Bull Salzburg, the leading names to move to Old Trafford.
