Six high-profile exclusions from 25-man Premier League squads

Everton plotting swoop for Man United outcast Sergio Romero

Premier League clubs have announced their 25-man squad for the 2020/21 season, and here we take a look at top six surprise exclusions.

Mesut Ozil

Ozil’s significance at Arsenal has withered in recent years, with all the managers not considering him in their plans, let alone Mikel Arteta. The Spanish manager has now excluded Ozil from both Premier League and Europa League squads. There is no denying that Ozil was untouchable during his heydays, but that looks a distant memory at the moment. With his contract expiring next summer, even Ozil wouldn’t believe the idea of continuing with the Gunners.

Phil Jones

Phil Jones has been serving the fringes at Manchester United for the past two seasons and no wonder he has been left out of the Premier League squad by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Axel Tuanzebe, Eric Bailly higher up in the pecking order. Jones, who joined Old Trafford outfit in 2011, has declined massively over the years and United would be ruing about his four-year extension he signed last year.

Sergio Romero

Romero is another United player who has been left behind by the Red Devils. The Argentine back-up keeper is no more wanted by Man Utd after bringing Dean Henderson from Sheffield United earlier this season. Romero had been linked with a move to Aston Villa and Everton before United called off the transfer. The failed move didn’t go well with his wife, and in return, she went on a tirade at the club.

Danny Rose

From playing in the Champions League semi-final last year to getting excluded from the both the Premier League and Champions League squad, life has come fast at Tottenham left-back Danny Rose. The 30-year-old returned to Spurs after a short loan spell at Newcastle last season, and now he has lost his place under Jose Mourinho.

Jean Michael Seri

The Ivorian midfielder has found his life hard at Fulham, with him being now left out of the Premier League squad for this season. The 29-year-old moved to the Premier League in 2018 and endured a difficult debut season at Fulham. He was loaned to Galatasaray last season.

Yannick Bolasie

Yannick Bolasie’s time at Everton is nearing his end after he has been excluded from the Toffees’ Premier League squad. Bolasie has spent his last three seasons on loan at Anderlecht, Aston Villa and Sporting CP since moving to Goodison Park in 2016.
