Bayern Munich winger Serge Gnabry tests Positive for COVID-19 ahead of Atletico clash

Bayern Munich begin title defence with 8-0 demolition of Schalke

The German winger is set to miss the UCL group stage game against Atletico Madrid.

Bayern Munich winger Serge Gnabry will miss the Champions League game against Atletico Madrid after testing positive for coronavirus.

The Bavarians have confirmed it through a statement and further adding that the German ace is home quarantined and doing well at the moment.

It is also added that tests have been carried out on the rest of his teammates ahead of Bayern’s Champions League opener against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.

Gnabry attended the pre-game training on Tuesday before testing positive for the virus, which has now put the entire squad at risk.

However, the game will be played without interruption unless there are 13 players available with the squad, as per new rules of UEFA.

Bayern also believe that local authorities would not request the entire squad to quarantine, unlike the situation Napoli faced ahead of their Serie A game against Juventus.

There is also a reported increase in coronavirus cases in Bundesliga following the international break last week, with Andrej Kramaric, Kasim Adams and Matteo Guendouzi being some of the latest victims.

Gnabry was an integral part of the Bavarians behind their continental treble last season.

Hansi Flick will rely on the likes of Douglas Costa and Kingsley Coman in the absence of Gnabry.

Bayern will begin their title defence against Atletico Madrid, with whom they have a better track record in the Champions League.
