Lionel Messi says that he has “no doubts” Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema should win the Ballon d’Or this year. Former Barcelona star made this comment after Real Madrid secured a remarkable victory in the Champions League final over Liverpool on Saturday.
According to Goal, Benzema scored 15 goals in the Champions League this season, including the winners in the overwhelming rounds against PSG, Chelsea, and Manchester City. Benzema helped Los Blancos to win La Liga with 27 goals and 12 assists.
The Paris Saint-Germain star spent almost his entire career in Barcelona before moving to Paris. The Argentine still recognizes the achievements of the French striker.
The PSG star had a hard time adjusting to the criticism of fans and figuring out how to be Les Parisiens. But he ended up this season with 25 goals/assists in Ligue 1 and Champions League. Messi adjusted his style and now, acts like a provider than a goal-scorer.
What did Messi think of Benzema?
“I think there are no doubts Benzema should win Ballon d’Or,” Messi told TyC Sports. “It is very clear that Benzema had a spectacular year and ended up elevating himself with the Champions League, being essential from the last 16 onwards in all the games. I think there are no doubts this year.”
Speaking of the Ballon d’Or award, Messi had a chance to win last year. He mentioned Lewandowski in his speech that the Bayern Munich star and winner of the European Golden shoe, deserved to have at least one of football’s top individual honour to his name.
Unfortunately, for Robert Lewandowski, it is just “empty words”. But later, he added his remarks were misinterpreted and clarified that Messi’s speech “really touched” him.
Although, Messi told TyC Sports that he was not interested in Lewandowski’s comments.
“Everyone says what they want and obviously he can express himself and say what he wants,” he said. “I honestly don’t share what he said but I didn’t give it much importance either. That’s it, it was there and he can say what he wants and I do not care.”
