Bayern Munich and other European giants could benefit from UEFA’s latest proposals for the Champions League qualification.
According to reports, the governing body are planning to radically restructure the Champions League from 2024 and the new rules could guarantee qualification based on UEFA coefficient.
The UEFA coefficient is a metric used for measuring historical performance in the European competitions and given how successful Manchester United have been in Europe, they could secure automatic qualification for the Champions League even if they finished outside the top 4.
Such advantages will be applicable in the case of other Premier League clubs like Liverpool as well. The Reds have won the competition 6 times and they are by far the most successful English club in the Champions League.
According to reports, English football is likely to be given 7 European qualification places and four of them will be given to the Champions League, two to the Europa League and one in the Europa conference League.
Any club that finishes between 5th and 7th in the League table could be upgraded to the Champions League based on their past performance in European competitions.
While it could be considered an unfair move for clubs like Leicester City who are just starting to qualify for European football, it makes sense to include the traditional European elite in the competition in order to attract more viewers and add more prestige to the competition.
